Tips for Online Students
How to Succeed in Jim’s Online Econ Classes
(even if you hate economics or didn’t do well in the past):
Tips from Past Students
At the end of the my online courses I have a survey to get feedback from students. One question I ask is
What advice would you give to future students planning to take Jim’s online class?
The following are what students in recent classes have said. I haven’t edited these answers except to highlight some that I personally think are very important. So if you want a good grade and want to succeed, make it easier on yourself and follow the advice of your fellow students that have gone before you. If you’re nervous about the course, just remember #77 below and ask.
— Jim
- Take the time to learn and understand all the units because the course builds from one unit to the next, you can’t just learn a unit for the test and then forget it for the next.
- stay on schedule or ahead, some units may take extra time. also, if you need help just ask professor Luke, he’s very helpful and will take the time to explain things if needed.
- Stay on task, like Jim suggests in the beginning!
- Study the subject more than one time and do not procrastinate.
- Take it, Jim is cool, he has a sense of humor, tells jokes, he helps you when you have a question, and its not stressful of a class to
take. - Get your points on the worksheets and quizzes
- Do not let the fact that there are no deadlines other than the
end of the course let you procrastinate! The information in this class
is not easy to fully understand and leaving yourself little time to do
it will only hurt you. - I planned and worked through each lesson throughout the semester. I had no trouble
completing all the lessons, worksheets, quizzes, midterms, etc.. BUT
BECAUSE THERE IS NO DEADLINE DUE DATES… DO NOT WAIT TO DO ALL THE
WORK AT THE LAST WEEK BEFORE ITS DUE. YOU WILL NOT LEARN ANYTHING NOR
BE ABLE TO COMPLETE EVERYTHING SUCCESSFULLY. - Focus on the quizzes because those questions are on the tests.
- You will learn and get a lot out of this class as long as you do not put your work off, go over Jim’s Guide and do the practice quizzes, they really help!
- To make a point to understand what you are reading because I spent a lot of my time re-reading what I already read.
- Take your time and re-read when you don’t understand.. I wished I had done that..
- To keep up with the tentative schedule, it’ll make life a little easier. Although, I think that the set up was my favorite out of all the classes I’ve taken since I started LCC in 2006. (This was my last semester.) It was actually a relief to work on economics after studying astronomy all day. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would.
- To make sure they set deadlines because this stuff really stinks packed into one week.
- stick with his guides and they will be the most helpful in the completion of the class.
- Great instructor, interesting topics that you will use in your life and want to know about.
- Don’t procrastinate!
- Don’t procrastinate!
- I would say its great because you can work the class into your schedule, but don’t fall behind in the class if you are looking for a solid grade.
- Since there is so much flexibility with due dates, don’t let that fool you and DO NOT put everything off until the end of the semester. However, I did enjoy the fact that we had multiple attempts at the worksheets and two attempts at quizzes. It made the learning experience a lot better.
- Just make sure to actually read Jim’s Guides and actually set time aside to work on the assignments. Don’t put everything off till the last minute, it will bite you in the butt.
- stay on top of things
- Course has great flexibility. Just don’t fall behind if you want a solid grade.
- Stay on track! Don’t wait until the last minute to get caught up.
- Stay on top of your work because it will help you immensely on your exams
- Buy the book and do the practice quizzes
- Keep ahead. Get all the help you can.
- Working on the quizes are really helpful for taking the test.
- Just don’t get caught behind.
- Pay close attention to every note that Jim makes. Do not think that this course will be a blow off because it surely is not!!
- Stay on top of things so you don’t get behind.
- I will suggest for them to take it becasue it covers all the essential economic concepts that you run into in the media.
- finally, to all the students who will be taking this course, its really a fun course, you would really enjoy it, and its the best collage class you would ever get.
- Make sure to keep up with the work… it can pile up if not done every week!
- Read the book, Take the practice exams because they dont count and can only help you. Take your time doing the worksheets and quizzes because they are not timed and it relaxes you more.
- …The information is interesting, but if you get stuck on anything, have questions, or need help, do not hesitate to ask the teacher or other students in the class…Do not take advantage of the flexibility, and enjoy the class, i know I did!!!
- Work on the units weekly or as often as you can. Do not put the work off untill the very end. And, If you have a problem or need a question answered, ask other students or Jim.
- To read thoroughly and pay attention to every detail. Always ask questions when you are stuck. Never give up because eventually you will come up with right answers.
- Spread out the time for each unit evenly, dont leave it until the end
- BUY THE BOOK!
Or at least make sure you have a book that explains the concepts. Looking at a printed version makes things os much clearer. - Always take the practice quizzes before the real quiz. Always review the first attempt of teh quiz before attempting again.
- My study plan was to first read the text, followed by the interactive tutorial, followed by the practice quiz, then the worksheet, then the quiz. It helps to keep the interactive tutorial on a separate tab while doing the worksheet, especially for units 2 and 9, with the circular flow diagram and with the banks and reserves.
- this course is an interesting class that you must take seriously! Even though it is flexible, dont procrastinate untill last minute! Manage your time and understand the concepts and you’ll do fine!
- Space out the units, don’t cram them. Actually read, especially the Jim’s Guide for every unit. Ask questions if needed.
- Don’t leave everything to the last minute
- Take the practice exams! Without those it would of been much more difficult.
- Do not leave everything until the last couple of weeks!! Leave enough time to study for the final because the final is worth 100 points!
- Take full advantage of the retakeables–quizzes, worksheets. Go at your own pace, but don’t wait until the last minute. Since you can, when taking quizzes, take full advantage of the fact that they’re not timed because there’s only two shots at getting 100. Take your own written notes from Jim’s guide–depending on your learning style, it may help you retain more, saving time on assignments.
- Be sure to get an early start on the course. Keep ahead of the course work, and don’t get behind!!!
- read the material, take the time to do the work and if there use all the online materials, the forums are very helpful
- Purchase the printable version of the book, be prepared to search the internet for information that will help you with the worksheets and the unit quizzes.
- TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE PRACTICE QUIZZES!!! I didn’t until the last unit and realized just how helpful it was and I could have kicked myself. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE HELP FORUMS!!! Again, I didn’t and when I went back in search of help… 9 units too late… I found that others had the exact same issues I had.
- Read the material and take the practice quizes.
- Try to get a good understanding of all aspects of this course, the more you understand the more interesting it is.
- Do the PRACTICE quizzes and always look at the slides. They make the boring textbook reading a lot easier to understand.
- To take thorough notes off of Jim’s Guide, Professor’s Nelson’s tutorials, and from the book.
- To tell them to the practice quizzes. I took macro economics on line and didn’t do the practice quizzes and that course was much harder.
- be prepared to read alot. Try to understanf it as much as they possibly can and what they don’t understand ask.
- Set a schedule for your workload and stick to it!
- Unless they are economists, the beginning may not be interesting, but after reading and understanding how these issues affect them personally, they will get interested. My advice would be to not look at the course as work, but as gaining skills to understand how the economy
works, relating something to you personally has always helped me learn. - Keep a steady pace.
- Make sure to manage your time! It is very important.
- Do NOT procrastonate!!! lol! Unless you do not value your sleep.
- Stay on task.
- Start early if you can… It’s a pain in the butt trying to cath up at the end.
- Do not wait last menute. Make sure to do the practice quizzes; they are EVERY HELPFUL. I cannot even emphasize how much! Pay more attention to any graphs.
- Stay on top of things, check your progress frequently, and use all of the available resources.
- To make sure they set weekly goals for themselves on what they want to accomplish, and to not cram everything in the end of the year. It just causes stress and lack of really absorbing the information.
- read jim’s guide and read the selected readings from the textbook and you should be alright
- Ask questions when you are stuck, and don’t wait and do all of the units at once. If you stick with the schedule provided, the class isn’t as confusing as one would expect.
- focus and stay self motivated
- Don’t wait til the last minute and defiantly don’t procrastinate!
- Make sure to look at the tutorials and do the practice quizzes because they are very helpful.
- I would tell future students to either work ahead, because it is very easy to do, or to keep up with your time line. I also think that
using the Help forums is very important, it helps other students and also yourself. - Set up your own schedule and stick to it. All the units take time so don’t think you can take it easy until the end.
- Just to make sure that they are motivated. Alot can be learned if they just focus and try.
- Don’t worry, Jim will make sure you get through it!
